For a hundred and fifty years, Americans have said things to each other with a wool cap and
a stitched logo. Where you are from. Who you root for. What you survived, what you can afford,
and which year you were paying attention. ALL CAPS is a cultural history of the
baseball cap, and an argument that the most ordinary object in the closet is actually a language,
one most of us speak fluently without ever noticing.
It starts before baseball had a hat at all, and it ends with a 2026 drop that sold out before you finished reading about it.
What it covers
The book runs the full arc: the pre-Civil War origins of the brim, the cap on the field
and the cap in the street, the makers who built the thing and the cultures that gave it meaning.
It moves through the league that started it, the artists and labels who rewrote what the cap could say,
the cities that claimed it, the resale economy that prices it, and the rooms, here and overseas,
where the next colorway is decided.
It is not a coffee-table picture book and it is not a brand history. It treats the cap the way a
good music critic treats a genre: seriously, and with an ear for where the meaning actually lives.
The voices in it
Much of the book is built on original, on-the-record interviews with the people who make these caps,
sell them, and built the culture that surrounds them. They are the ones who get to say what really
happened. Those conversations are still going.
